Many people mistake fads, trends, fashion and mindset.
When you do something only for how popular it has become, and you don't understand why that is being done, you are a follower of fads. Fads always look out of style [even if their intended look is to be out of style].
Trends are those ideas that have been the most popular and extracted from a particular breed of technique from a mindset. Trends are only one part of fashion, but by themselves they are part of fads.
If you look for fashion, you need the mindset. They are very close because both are feedback-looped systems [like a chameleon in front of a mirror]. Fashion is about styles, expression, belonging, not only trends.
The mindset is the logic by which we try to understand reality make sense. All the connections in our brain from things old and new... When you want to find something, I bet you google it... I bet you can think of a zillion songs you can choose to listen to now, because you have an ipod...
As you can see, those people afraid of Fashion, are really, afraid of updating, afraid of the only certainty we hold: everything changes, and everyday more rapidly. "Equilibrium is dead".
Stay away from the fads, do your research, get into fashion, and please practice a lot. Be open to updates in the mindset, keeping things forward [not avant garde, pragmatic or in the middle]... Everyone else is changing, even if you won't...
