Architects / Designers, are hired to go beyond & against the flow. The boring flow does not bring in anything. We can learn some lessons then from the current financial crisis. To think everyone is rational and that just because things have been happening the way they have that makes it ok, it is the biggest mistake. To believe that those who hold the money have a scheme that will forever be the "best business" and to do as they say because they "know about money". Designers only useful by turning their formula into form has finally be proven stupid! This is when the post-post-critical age has officially started, even though we have seen traces of it trying to surface in recent years.
The point of hiring a designer or an architect is because of the unexpected [or... the least expected]. Those who dare go beyond the formulas, or at least understand them to rewrite them, get to become relevant interesting & famous. At least until they decide to stand still.
If design & architecture can be embeded into everything, why not engage in it?! Remember, constant change is the only certainty in our current hyper-connected world. And to loose a little control at the top can't hurt either...
